Stanza 1

To give and outline the institutional goals and objectives for the years to come, the University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa created the Directorate for Institutional Research and Academic Planning (DIRAP). By doing this the institution created an institutional structure which builds on the current good practice and the demands and challenges of the University, to identify the relevant strategies and deliverables required to achieve these goals and to assure enhanced continuous academic innovation and effectiveness.

Stanza 2

This establishment grew out of a need within the University to address priorities and external requirements within its context, and a realisation at the University that strategies and academic planning, management information, Institutional research and quality assurance should be organised in a more integrated and organised manner than had previously been the case. The primary function of DIRAP is to gather and interpret information, planning (to a certain extent also operationalising), reporting, and monitoring to establish the long term academic planning for the UFS.
